Bodh Divas, also known as Buddha Purnima or Vesak Day, is a significant and auspicious festival celebrated by Buddhists all over the world.
The festival marks the birth, enlightenment, and death of Lord Buddha, the founder of Buddhism, and is considered one of the most important
events in the Buddhist calendar. In this article, we will explore the history and significance of Bodh Divas and how it is celebrated.

History of Bodh Divas:

Bodh Divas is celebrated on the full moon day in the month of Vaisakha (April or May) according to the Hindu calendar.
It is believed that Lord Buddha was born on this day in 563 BCE in Lumbini, which is now part of Nepal. He was born into a royal family but left his luxurious life in search of the truth and enlightenment.
After years of wandering and meditation, he finally achieved enlightenment under a Bodhi tree in Bodh Gaya, India. This event is considered the most important milestone in the life of Lord Buddha and is known as Bodh Gaya.

After attaining enlightenment, Lord Buddha spent the rest of his life spreading his teachings and preaching the path to liberation and freedom from suffering.
He passed away at the age of 80 in Kushinagar, India, on the same full moon day in the month of Vaisakha. The day of his birth, enlightenment, and death is celebrated as Bodh Divas.

Significance of Bodh Divas:

Bodh Divas is a significant festival for Buddhists as it celebrates the life and teachings of Lord Buddha. His teachings on the Four Noble Truths and the Eightfold Path provide guidance for Buddhists on how to live a meaningful and fulfilling life.
The festival is a reminder of his message of compassion, non-violence, and mindfulness, which are relevant even today.

Bodh Divas is also a time for self-reflection and introspection. Buddhists use this day to reflect on their own lives and progress on the path towards enlightenment.
They make a commitment to follow the teachings of Lord Buddha and strive towards inner peace and happiness.

It consists of five colours, each representing a different aspect of Buddhism – blue for compassion, yellow for the Middle Way, red for blessings, white for purity, and orange for wisdom.

Another important aspect of the celebrations is the offering of alms to the needy. Buddhists believe in the practice of dana, or generosity, and use this day to offer food, clothing, and other essentials to the less fortunate.
This act of giving is seen as a way of purifying one’s mind and accumulating good karma.

Bodh Divas is also a time for spiritual contemplation and meditation. Many Buddhists spend the day in quiet meditation, reflecting on Lord Buddha’s teachings and striving towards inner peace and enlightenment.
